1 year agoIn Kozhuf, we have a combination of two climates – the continental and the Mediterranean climate, which makes us unique in Europe for beekeeping above 1,300 meters above sea level. Here, we have it in its purest form, along the flow of the Dosnica river, in the cave-ridden area and in the old beech trees, we have Apis mellifera macedonica, our native, indigenous honey bee.
The natural riches of Kozuf mountain have long been known to biologists and ecologists, but also to the people living at the foot of this mountain. It is rich in water and endemic plant species, and a large part of it is still literally untouched, so some of our purest and most beautiful mountain rivers spring and flow from Kozhuf. About fifteen years ago, an attempt was made to bring more visitors to Kozhuf and to transform part of it into a winter ski center. Nothing came of it, and the construction of the center was the last major construction effort on the slopes of the mountain. Today, it is mostly visited and enjoyed by the residents of Gevgelija, Demir Kapija, and Kavadarci, and Kozhuf's livelihood is extracted only by the numerous blueberry pickers and the residents of the villages on its slopes. 'My brother and I are the fifth generation of beekeepers in my family; our bee farm dates back to 1878. Here we have a combination of the two climates – the continental and the Mediterranean climate, which makes us unique in Europe for beekeeping above 1,300 meters above sea level. Here, we have it in its purest form, along the flow of the Dosnica river, in the cave-ridden area and in the old beech trees, we have Apis mellifera macedonica, our native, indigenous honey bee,' says Kristijan Alchinov, a beekeeper.
